The Wonder

Emma Donoghue is rapidly establishing herself on my favourite authors, buy-everything-they-write-as-soon-as-it-comes-out, list.
This book is a return to historical fiction (although a lot more recent history than some of her earlier stuff), telling the story of a nurse tasked to watch over a supposedly miraculous fasting girl shortly after the Irish famine. It's one of those stories where modern knowledge lets the reader be one step ahead of the characters in figuring out what's really going on, but that knowledge doesn't spoil the building suspense.
