I got this fair-condition softcover at the Dunstable MA public library's ongoing book sale. It's the first in the "Bill Hodges" trilogy, and has inspired a 2017 mini-series adaptation. I read FInders Keepers, the second book in the trilogy; should be interesting to backtrack and see how it all began!
Later: The book opens with a chilling sequence, in which we begin to get attached to a handful of characters who've met while waiting in line at a job fair. And then a big Mercedes is driven into the line, killing many and wounding more...
From there we shift to the viewpoints of Bill Hodges, an ex-cop who's received messages from someone claiming to have driven the death-car, and Brady Hartsfield, apparently the killer himself, who wants to play a game with Hodges over Hartsfield's next big killing...
While there's plenty of psychological suspense and a LOT of back-story, I can't say I loved the novel; I think I found the sequel more enjoyable in part because it had its own subplots, ones that interested me a bit more than these. Still, it has its moments!
