Kate Ellis normally writes modern-set police procedurals with older mysteries interwoven through them, but here she has set the whole story in one timeline. It was a good move to take this new approach, as it has lent a freshness to her narrative skills which I thought had been missing from the latest Wesley Peterson efforts.
It's 1919 and somebody is killing women in a small Derbyshire community which lost a number of men in the war. An inspector has been sent from Scotland Yard to solve the case, and he quickly finds an ally in Flora, the doctor's daughter, who has lost people herself and has her own mystery to solve. Inspector Lincoln has to work against the biases and prejudices of the people around him - but is he falling victim to his own?
I really enjoyed this. It's possible that it drags a little towards the middle, but all the extra strands of the story do turn out to be relevant and you're rewarded for paying attention. As always, I was hopeless at working out whodunnit until it was revealed. Quicker minds than mine might find it more obvious...

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I wasn't as keen on this as I thought I'd be... I liked the set-up, but the resolution of the book was really frustrating. I think I've just read too many thrillers where the murderer is the same as with "A High Mortality of Doves". About half-way through I thought "I really hope the murderer isn't who I think it is..." and it was. A bit disappointing.

I enjoyed this book, it was a lesser used time period and location which was a difference to the norm. I wondered how it was going to resolve with the various red herrings and plot threads, but was surprised by the eventual reveal of the murderer. Worth a read if you enjoy crime fiction.
I enjoyed this but felt like there were just a few too many twists for the ultimate ending to be satisfying. I got all worked up over the alternate resolutions and then found the final reveal disappointing.
