This first novel by Saleema Nawaz was one of the 2016 Canada Reads finalists. It covers a lot of ground, perhaps too much, as it explores the relationship between two sisters, single parenthood, anorexia, immigrant families and refugees seeking asylum. Toss in a bagel shop and Quebec nationalism, and you've got all the CanLit themes covered. The novel seemed unfocused as a result, but I did like the characters and the quality of writing and would be willing to read more from this author.
