This is a love story, but not a romance. It is also a mystery. Two sisters are cleaning their childhood home as their mother lies in a coma. They find a diary, that seems to indicate that their mother had a great love that she abandoned before marrying their late father. The sisters puzzle over this revelation as they thought their steady as a rock father was the only one their mother truly loved.
The book jumps from the present time, to the diary, to the actual story of the beautiful, wealthy Elizabeth and the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, A.J. who is as different from the girls father as chalk to cheese.

It starts with sisters finding an old diary of their mother's when they are clearing out their parents' house for the new owners. They decide to read it and what follows are diary entries plus a narration of what was happening at the time and finally the sisters' reaction to events.
It is difficult to write a book like this without giving away the ending but Goudge does it very well. The characters are very real and sympathetic and as long as one remembers that the fifties were a different world the events are believable. I do have a query, though. There is a woman mentioned, Olive Diefenbaker, and I really wonder where she found the name because Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker was married to an Olive and I can't think the name is particularly common.
Any way, I enjoyed the book.

Picked up at the Lower Mainland Bookcrossing Meetup this week.

The two previous readers felt I'd like this book. They are almost always right! so I'm looking forward to reading this.

A sweet story. The 1950's was another age, but something like the 60's.
And a reminder that few children really know their parents' histories, let alone their inner lives. :-)

Releasing at Word in Vancouver, 2017.
