Back cover:

"The Moonstone, a priceless Indian diamond which had come to England as spoils of war, is given to Rachel Verrinder on her eighteenth birthday. Thatvery night, the stone is stolen; suspicion falls on a hunchbacked housemaid, on Rachel's cousin Franklin Blade, on a troupe of mysterious Indian jugglers, and on Rachel herself.

The phlegmatic Sergeant Cuff is called in, and with the help of Betteredge, the Robinson Crusoe-reading loquacious Steward, the mystery of the missing stone is ingeniously solved."

I enjoyed this book very much. Collins has a humor that works for me and this book is far from being a serious detective story. It was written in 1860s and therefore has a bit different flavor to it. I'd say it falls to a category of cozy mystery.

The characters are great, two above the rest of them. Steward Betteredge reads Robinson Crusoe and vows on it's wisdom, Drusilla Clack is devoted Christian who tries her best to remind people around her how sin lurks everywhere.

This book in on the 1001 books you must read blahblah list which I follow and I must say, it was a especially great find! Strong recommendation.

I liked a story and the characters a lot, especially the first part that was told by Betteridge. After that I felt that it was a bit too slow for my taste. Definitely worth reading though. Thank you for your recommendation sannuli!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I left the book inside one of my favourite places to eat, at Aleksanterinkatu 13, 5th floor. Excellent lunch buffet.
Enjoy reading and eating!

Edit 23.5.18: The book was still where I left it. We had a meet-up in this restaurant so I offered the book there. As no-one grabbed it, I left it on the window sill, in the cabinet part of the restaurant.
