The insufferably snobbish and penny-pinching Prussian Baron Otto Von Ottringe and his second wife Edelgard somehow find themselves embroiled in an unlikely horse-drawn caravan holiday in Suffolk, accompanied by a motley crew consisting of a German acquaintance and several of her friends and relatives. Otto takes it upon himself to write an account of his month on foreign soil in order to read it out (once edited with his red pencil) to his circle of friends upon their return. So, as he adresses his "hearers", we are only given the baron's opinions and misfortunes as he leads the horse along the narrow lanes, up and down hills and into fields and farmyards, constantly complaining and sitting there giving out orders to the lowly and stupid women whose obvious purpose in life is to bear children and minister to his needs.
Finding allies in her companions, Edelgard soon rebels, shortening her skirts, loosening her hair and dancing - dancing! - with one of the young men in the party.
I will not say how it ends, but gradually the comedy of Otto's character gives way to incredulity, until I actually felt a little sorry for him. I suppose he died in self-righteous ignorance.

Elizabeth von Arnim writes with a mixture of humour, sharp wit and vitriol. Excellent.

A note to the editor: if you write caravaners, you should also write caravaning (back cover blurb has caravanning). Like benefit/benefiting, profit/profiting.
