I got this hefty softcover at Barnes and Noble - I've enjoyed several of their manga adaptations of classics. This one features tales from the first Jungle Book (including "The White Seal" and "Rikki-tikki-tavi" as well as the Mowgli stories), with some adaptations and with interesting, sometimes-scary artwork. (The notes at the back of the book explaining the adapter's choices are worth reading.)

I've loved the Jungle Book stories about Mowgli and his friends almost since I can remember; in fact I think it was the first book I read all the way through and then started back at the beginning again (this would have been at about age 8). I wanted to go hang out with Kaa and Bagheera - heck, sometimes I still do... The language is beautiful, the jungle imagery wondrous (though often suitably harsh), and Mowgli a compelling hero. While I recommend reading the originals, this adaptation is good - it does preserve *some* of the beautiful language, and it does NOT "Disney-fy" the characters; we see how powerful and dangerous the jungle animals can be when defending their own, with even Baloo the bear showing his fangs in Mowgli's defense. I was pleased to see a good rendition of "Kaa's Hunting" here, as Kaa is perhaps my favorite character; his size, power, and intimidating qualities are all shown, and yet he's also shown as an ally of Mowgli's, rather than the "all snakes are villains" version that many adaptations have used.

The book includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the tale of a young mongoose who learns to defend his home (and that of his human hosts) from cobras, "The White Seal," about a young seal who tries to find a place where seals can live free from hunting by man; "Toomai of the Elephants," about a young boy whose fondness for an elephant takes him into the jungle to witness their "dance" - and "Her Majesty's Servants", a whimsical look at camp-life in India as it might be seen by the various animals who toil there.

[There's a TV Tropes page for The Jungle Book; very entertaining, though if you haven't read the book yet, do beware of spoilers.]

I left this book in the Little Free Library on the rail trail (just behind Haley's Ice Cream) at around 4; hope the finder enjoys it!
