This was an okay book. While I enjoyed the stuff about the fashion industry (especially the quotes at the beginning of each chapter) and absolutely loved the historical tidbits, I found that the love story between Kate and Patrick overshadowed a lot of the history, and that particular love story was so wrought with Catholic guilt and propriety that it bored me stiff.

Kate is a back room couturier, responsible for much of the wardrobe of 'the Wife', First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. She's moved to the US from Ireland but the social values in New York seem sometimes more restrictive than where she's come from, with women not being allowed into certain pubs and pressure for her to settle down with a man even though it would mean giving up the job she loves. As Kate is torn about her future, she becomes more and more obsessed with the Wife, and especially with the pink suit she is making, the one that will be worn on the day of JFK's assassination. Although there's a lot of focus on the fashion industry in this book, which rather passed me by, it's a good story with human and cultural interest.
