This is one of several books I brought home from the fundraising shelves within Grewelthorpe Village Hall last night while enjoying an evening of English Country Dancing. It looks like an interesting addition to my depleting piles of books To Be Read - and its being a Virago Modern Classic is a bonus, their livery is in itself a recommendation!

Amazon Editorial Review: "On a rainy Sunday in January, the recently widowed Mrs Palfrey arrives at the Claremont Hotel where she will spend her remaining days. Her fellow residents are magnificently eccentric and endlessly curious, living off crumbs of affection and snippets of gossip. Together, upper lips stiffened, they fight off their twin enemies: boredom and the Grim Reaper.
Then one day Mrs Palfrey strikes up an unlikely friendship with an impoverished young writer, Ludo, who sees her as inspiration for his novel."

Very good but desperately sad. A moving and memorable portrayal of a nightmare old age that none of us would want to look forward to . . . .

Released 6 yrs ago (8/16/2017 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This is one of a couple of books I swapped in Brigantes last night while in York for a delicious meal in the Thai restaurant along the road.

Well over a million people around the world give their books a unique BookCrossing IDentity number (BCID) before sending them out to find new readers. Since the start of the scheme in April 2001 nearly twelve million such books have been put into circulation. This is one of them!

Our hope is that we can track the progress of our books once they've left our hands - and that's possible if finders like you visit the website, key in the BCID and leave a comment, however long or short. It's fun, it doesn't have to cost anything, although the site always appreciates donations towards running costs, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. You don't have to join but if you do you'll be able to number and track your own books!

Picked up at the August York Bookcrossing meetup.

Released 6 yrs ago (9/26/2017 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Oh, NuKnees is right, this is desperately sad! But witty, and very well written. Read it when you're felling chipper, not on a sad Sunday afternoon.

To be released at the September York Bookcrossing meetup.

Thank you for sending this to me Reet, we watched the film a few years ago and I'm interested to read the original story. (Nice tea bag included too!)

An interesting read; my first by this author. Well written with distinct characters, but ultimately very grim!

Picked up at today's Birmingham meetup: I'd heard a little of this on the radio and wanted to read it.
