Seventeen-year-old Flora Banks has no short-term memory. Her mind resets itself several times a day, and has since the age of ten, when the tumor that was removed from Flora's brain took with it her ability to make new memories. That is, until she kisses Drake, her best friend's boyfriend, the night before he leaves town. Miraculously, this one memory breaks through Flora's fractured mind, and sticks. Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life.

With little more than the words "be brave" inked into her skin, and written reminders of who she is and why her memory is so limited, Flora sets off on an impossible journey to Svalbard, Norway, the land of the midnight sun, determined to find Drake. But from the moment she arrives in the arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must "be brave" if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home.

I was looking forward to reading this book, but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. I thought the plot was very unrealistic and I didn’t like the way the story was told. I mean, I get it: the main character - Flora - has amnesia and remembers nearly nothing except for kissing a boy at the beach. But as a reader, I really did not enjoy reading the same sentences over and over again.

Flora follows her one memory and gets herself on a plane to the artic. This is the part I found truly unrealistic. The girl doesn’t remember things longer than a few hours, but somehow she manages several flights. I’m pretty sure a 17 year old unaccompanied minor with amnesia would encounter a few issues on such a trip.

There’s a “big reveal” at the end of the story, through a letter from her brother. I think the author wanted to get some kind of plot twist in there, but I felt it was just quickly added in an attempt to make the story more interesting and it just wasn’t really relevant.

But perhaps I’m just getting too old to enjoy YA novels.

I will try to find a new home for this book!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This book continues to travel, this time as part of the 1st name sweeps. I hope the winner enjoys reading this book, as I always feel a bit guilty for sending out books that I didn’t like myself (even though this one seems to be quite popular and it’s really just me who didn’t enjoy it, I think).

I always try to post my controlled releases with real stamps. If you are not a collector yourself, you might want to check out this post on the forum about a stamps sweeps that I’m currently organising or this one about Bookcrossers who collect stamps. A lot of Bookcrossers collect stamps for charity, so it’s nice to find them a good home!

I am the lucky decoy this time. Thanks for the book. I am interested to read this as another bookcrosser just recommended the author to me a few weeks ago. Thanks for the stamps. Too bad a few of them were not in the best condition at arrival, but more than half survived the trip.

The premise has promise but the constant almost verbatim reiteration of the one memory is a bit much for me, especially at the beginning when it occurs more often. The story picks up and becomes more interesting as Flora gets on her adventure.
