Waiting for Daisy

Purchased at Miami's library book sale, because the title - or rather, the too-long-for-registration subtitle of "A Tale of Two Continents, Three Religions, Five Infertility Doctors, an Oscar, an Atomic Bomb, a Romantic Night and One Woman's Quest to Become a Mother"- sounds interesting.
When I was reading the book, I asked my husband, do you regret not having a kid, and thankfully, he said no, and we both agree that we enjoy this quieter, freer lifestyle, not that it's better, it suits us better. For I would hate to be in Orenstein's position, to decide that you do not want children, and then suddenly the biological alarm screams, and you go crazy trying to get yourself pregnant.
One episode to illustrate the point: Orenstein's gynecologist asked her to have intercourse immediately before her next appointment. It was a busy day, her husband was running late. He called from the car "Can you get started without me and be ready to go when I get there?" Okay, my husband and I have said something similar, but along the line of cooking dinner or dressing up for a dinner party. Never ever in that context... No wonder he complained that she was treating him like sperm bank on legs. Even when, later in the book, he suggested gently that her obsession was killing the marriage, her immediate thought was, now how can I get his semen? Urgh.
This book will go in a replacement box for the Memoir bookbox, which got stalled.

Made it home in the bookbox. Can't wait to start reading it!
I was drawn to this book because a good friend of mine has started invitro. She got pregnant, but miscarried and she and her husband are deciding how many times they think they can go through this. They're so young! And have been trying for years. I wish there were a way I could help them. I think that's what I was hoping to discover in this book: something they haven't tried.
I liked that the author was so honest with her obliviousness to how much conception was taking over her life to the detriment of her marriage and sanity. My heart went out to her. Her experience is probably the same as so many women who wait to have a child and then discover that they can't conceive. She shared that beautifully. I'm not sure I'd feel reading it if I were in the same boat, but as an outsider to this dilemma, it was eye-opening.
