8 out of 10

A series of short essays on many different topics, all informed by the author's having grown up in then-Communist Yugoslavia.

I enjoyed the piece about her attitude about money. The habit of buying cheap stuff, preferably on sale, even though she knows it won't be durable, has stuck with her. On the rare occasions when she buys something good (for example, an Armani dress), she's afraid to wear it for fear that it will be damaged. Her Swedish husband has different attitudes about money and is bemused by hers. Intellectually she sees his point, but old habits die hard.
