I loved this book, just as I loved the movie that came from it! There's a good rythm, a good humour, it's funny to see that love sickness from a man's point of view, it's not heavy, not too light, just a real good moment along the pages.
It's a pity I don't know the sound track by heart, but just with the words I can still hear the music.
Thanks Nuno for letting me discover this book.

Journal Entry 7 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, May 30, 2004
I loved it! I'd seen the film before and loved that too, but the book is no doubt better (then again, any book would have to be pretty bad not to best the movie made from it). I can't say I've never laughed so much in my life, but it definitely got close every now and then. I felt a very strong urge to make the protagonist do something right for once (even though I've got no clue as to how I'd do that).

I'll send it on to MollyGrue as soon as possible!

Journal Entry 8 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Wednesday, June 2, 2004

Journal Entry 10 by MollyGrue from Tacoma, Washington USA on Monday, June 14, 2004
The movie is like a shortened cliffs notes of this wonderful book. While I really enjoyed the movie, reading the original novel was somehow a more meaningful experience.

Journal Entry 12 by Cpetersky from Seattle, Washington USA on Thursday, July 1, 2004
Received in the mail a while back. I'm taking it with me to Las Vegas.

Journal Entry 13 by Cpetersky from Seattle, Washington USA on Tuesday, July 27, 2004
I remember a bit about seeing the movie, and how upset some people were when the locale changed to Chicago. But I guess I remember less about the movie than I thought, because the book felt almost completely new to me.

I got a kick out of the whole compilation tape thing -- lord knows, I did enough compilation tapes in my time, using other people's recorded music to try to express who I was or my experiences of the time. I still have a compilation tape I made when I returned to the US from Japan, an effort at trying to distill a couple of years into ninety minutes.

Another thing that struck me -- how this book is really rooted in a different sort of time, in terms of vinyl and non-digitally propagated media. How things have changed in the last 10 years!

I have heard that men really relate to Rob's (the main character's) perspective. I found this to be a little frightening, as he hasn't grown up yet, and doesn't seem to really understand women at all.

Still, it was a satisfying read, and as good as the other Hornby books I've read.

Well, it's in the mail now, and travelling off to the next person on the list.

Journal Entry 14 by Arwen-Galadriel from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Monday, August 9, 2004
Received book in the mail on Friday and will hopefully be getting to it this weekend as I have one book infront of it. I'll journal once I've done some reading.

Journal Entry 15 by Arwen-Galadriel from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Wednesday, August 25, 2004
Finished the book this afternoon and will send the book along to the next person as soon as I get the address. As for my thoughts...

I really enjoyed the book (granted I did like the movie slightly more) and would definately recommend. I have to admit I am slightly jealous of his record collection and would love to get my hands on it, but hey you can't have everything.

Journal Entry 16 by Arwen-Galadriel from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Wednesday, September 1, 2004

Fun book, delicious to read. I can't decide if I like it more than the movie, though. I sure love the movie's soundtrack, it's a great album ;-)

Anyway, the book is already on its way back to Portugal. Good readings!

I've tried but the book didin't fascinated me. i read till page 80 to try to see if it get better, but i really wasn't in the right mood...
it's a bit boring, despite the musical theme that could be more interesting...

i already sent a message to the next person

Journal Entry 26 by Hypsis on Sunday, October 23, 2005
I have to say that this book was a nice surprise. From the comments I heard, I really didn't think I would like it, but I did! right from the beginning of the book, the author has a way of turning the main character's depression into something that is half funny, half serious, and he often says things that make you think, because his thoughts and doubts about life and relationships seem real. this passage made me think:

«It's important to have something going on somewhere, at work or at home, otherwise you're just clinging on. If I've lived in Bosnia, then not having a girlfriend wouldn't seem like the most important thing in the world, but here in Crouch End it does. You need as much ballast as possible to keep you from floating away; you need people around you, things going on, otherwise life is like some film where the money ran out, and there are no sets or locations, or supporting actors, and it's just one bloke on his own, staring into the camera with nothing to do, and nobody to speak to, and who'd believe his character then?»
