Orphaned at the meeting. Looks interesting, so will have to decide if it should travel on unread!

This was enjoyable; basically a G-rated romance (the author, Linda Goodnight, writes mostly Christian fiction, so nothing more than a kiss in this book :-)). However, in addition to a romantic story, it deals with some other issues, particularly child abuse/neglect.

Hayden Winters was an interesting character; a very kind man with a shameful past (at least he thinks so, though it was his childhood and thus out of his control) who writes the most graphic of murder mysteries, more like pure horror. Lately, he's been dreaming of a character and setting and story from 100 years ago and really wants to write a historical novel, but knows that his agent probably won't be willing to take a chance on a genre change.

Carrie Riley is sweet and caring, with many phobias, especially of thunderstorms. She also has an incident in her past that haunts her. She and Hayden meet while staying at the same inn, during a middle of the night thunderstorm when neither can sleep.

A young boy, Brody, shows up at the inn during the storm. He had been sleeping outside but now seeks shelter. Why isn't he at home? His alcoholic father is unpredictable so Brody often prefers to camp in the woods.

To tell any more of the plot would be to give too much away, so I'll end here. This isn't the kind of book I'd have picked up on my own, but I'm glad it was leftover at a meetup and that I took a chance on it! It was a quick and satisfying read.

Amazon:
A stranger's arrival in a small Southern town stirs up old secrets and new dreams in this beautiful story full of hope and haunting mystery, and with the power to win your heart.

Renowned yet private, thriller writer Hayden Winters lives a life colored by lies. As he is deeply ashamed of his past, his hunger for an honest relationship and dreams of starting a family remain unsatisfied, and he can trust no one with his secrets. He's determined to outrun his personal demons, but the charming old Peach Orchard Inn and a woman whose presence is as gentle as a sparrow's song stops him in his tracks.

Carrie Riley is afraid of everything from flying to thunderstorms, and pretty much of life itself. But meeting the enigmatic writer staying at the inn emboldens her to learn everything about him. When they discover a vulnerable boy hiding at the inn, Hayden is compelled to help Carrie protect him. Soon they're led to a centuries-old mystery that haunts Hayden's sleep, and his only safe haven is Carrie. As the secrets of the past and present cause their lives to become entwined, all that's left to come to light is love—if the grim truth doesn't tear them apart first.
