A novel of manners and an indictment of the stifling, snooty world of "high society." We are to sympathize with the lovely Miss Lily Bart, the shining light of New York, as she approaches her thirtieth year and remains unmarried. She is the object of jealousies from married women in her set and unwanted advances from MARRIED men of her set. All of which sends her down a slowly constricting funnel toward ruin and poverty.
