WHO REALLY KILLED THE HADLER FAMILY? It hasn't rained in Kiewarra for two years. Tensions in the farming community become unbearable when three members of the Hadler family are discovered shot to death on their property. Everyone assumes Luke Hadler committed suicide after slaughtering his wife and six-year-old son. Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to his hometown for the funerals and is unwillingly drawn into the investigation. As suspicion spreads through the town, Falk is forced to confront the community that rejected him twenty years earlier. Because Falk and his childhood friend Luke Hadler shared a secret, one which Luke's death threatens to unearth ...

I found this book really gripping. The characters are believable and it's written in a clear and simple style. The desolate backdrop of small rural community in a dried out countryside permeates the story and creates an unforgiving ambience. It demonstrates how it is very hard to detach yourself from a stereotypical ultra-rural upbringing, even if you physically leave. It'll keep you guessing to the end even although there are hints there. I didn’t give it more stars because there were a couple of niggles but nothing to detract from the book.

It also went down very well with the book group. We mark out of five so 4 and 5 stars all round.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Many thanks – earthcaroleanne - for bringing THE DRY to the Old Gang Meetup, Sun 12 Aug for me, I have travelling plans for this. My apologies for the delay in making a ‘caught’ journal entry, here is one at last… combined with a ‘release’ journal entry as this is soon to be wrapped up into a parcel heading down south.

Requested this as I wondered if it might possibly interest my brother-in-law, he of a fondness for crime novels with a darker edge! Intended swooping through it myself but a swift peak gave me to think its blackness a key note I was not in the mood for myself. Hoping bil will make some notes of his findings here, thanks again earthcaroleanne!

UPDATE - WED 29 AUG 2018: organisational hic-cups meant alteration to my posting schedule. In the end the total number of late BIRTHDAY BOOKCROSSING parcels totalled five, each under 2 kg’s in weight. These all entered the Postal system last thing today and will be picked up and processed on Thursday 30 August.

FURTHER UPDATE - JUL 2019: adored this, gripping tale, intricate sense of community, the land looms as large as a separate character, and is peopled with characters rich with their own stories - wow!

Arrived in Somerset as part of Mr Flutterbies9's bumper birthday set of packages.

This is a new author for him but with tbr having just been added to in spectacular fashion, I'm not sure how long he will take to get around to it!

Added Nov 2023.
Mr Flutterbies9 had this in a bag full of books he had read (but never told me about so I could journal his thoughts, sadly) and he wanted to travel onwards. When I think of somewhere it can go I will release this.

Off on a new adventure. Happy travels little book.
