When down-at-heel conjurer Willaim Wilson gets booked for a string of cabaret gigs in Berlin, he is hoping his luck is on the turn. There were certain spectators from his last show he'd rather forget. Amongst the showgirls and tricksters of Berlin's scandalous underground William can abandon his heart, his head and more importantly, his past. But secrets have a habit of catching up with him and the line between the act and reality starts to blur.

A friend recently said this wasn't Louise Welsh's best book and I'm glad she said that as it's the first one I've read and I'll find it difficult to review. I liked the story, I wanted to know what would happen next so I didn't want to put it down. Reading it while commuting was very frustrating because I couldn't choose when I had to stop. But there was something I didn't like about the writing and the language and I'm not sure I can put my finger on exactly what it was. Plus there were unnecessary mistakes in the Glasgow sections. Unnecessary because she lives in Glasgow. Of course I couldn't tell how accurate the London and Berlin chapters were.

Thank you SO much for this wishlist book within a mammoth NSS parcel at the Loughborough unconvention. So very generous of you. I've never visited Scotland but my dad worked as a sales manager for a chemical company in Selkirk when I was very little and I know he liked the area (the borders, I believe) very much, so I would like to visit at some point, definitely. The guide books about The Falkirk Wheel and The kelpies are very interesting, so I'll enjoy reading those more over the coming days. I don't like shortbread but Retromonkey's face lit up when she saw it in the package and she ate them when we left the RNIB College on the Saturday evening and said they were delicious! Thanks again for being so generous, earthcaroleanne :) X
