I read this as a teenager, prompted by my Grandad, and loved it. Looking forward to re-reading it.

Cordell's wonderful book about the terrible treatment of the Welsh ironworkers by their English masters during the time of the Industrial Revolution, the beginnings of the formation of Unions and the start of the Chartist movement. The Mortymer family, their neighbours and their struggles come to life right from the first page, the beautiful, passionate and politically-minded Morfydd, the many children of Iolo Milk, Hywel the head of the family who believes in supporting the masters, the terrible injuries to children working at very young ages, and of course the hero Iestyn Mortymer who grows up during the book.
Although the book says at the start that 'the characters and situations in this book are entirely imaginary and bear no relation to any real person or actual happening' of course many of the events and characters are very much real - Dic Penderyn and John Frost and the Newport Rising, and of course Crawshay Bailey.
The book is especially close to my heart as a whole branch of my ancestors lived in the Penderyn and Brecon areas, and while most of them seem to have been farmers and labourers it's almost certain that some of them must have been ironworkers. While looking for family graves we came across the grave of Ironmaster Robert Thompson Crawshay. The words on it are 'God forgive me'.
