Journal Entry 1 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Monday, March 15, 2004
A beautiful book on all accounts! I absolutely loved it. I am a "larger woman" myself so I could totally sympathize with the heroine, which is easy anyway since she is so lovable (much more so than Bridget Jones and the likes) and funny. I even cried a bit at the end (although that doesn't say much since I am crying at the drop of a hat...).

I finished it just today and would like to just start reading it over again. But I will restrain myself, because this is certainly a book I want many people to read. I got the idea to read it myself when I saw it on many people's wishlists. Now I know why that is.

So as usual, I will start a bookring with it to give others a chance at it. I am quite reluctant to give it out of my hands, but since that was the original purpose when I bought it, I will do it anyway. ;-)

If you are interested, send my a PM and I will compile a list. I'd like to keep this ring in Europe if possible to make it travel faster without several overseas travels. Should there be overwhelming interest from overseas, I will think about expanding the ring worldwide (provided I find enough people willing to ship overseas).

A great sundayafternoon-read. Once started it's difficult to quit reading. I really loved the book. It's easy to symphatize with Cannie and the ay she sees the world after she realized how here ex-boyfriend really thought about her.

As soon as I received ecmwfinswe's address this books travels further through europe.

This book took just the weekend to reach me, here it is in Sweden. I'll start reading it this week.

Journal Entry 8 by ecmwfinswe on Tuesday, June 29, 2004
It took me some time to get into the story. To begin with I just thought that Cannie had herself to blame and it was kind of boring to read about her pitying herself. But in the middle of the book, around the occasion when she met Maxi the book started to be interesting. Funny in many ways but also things to think about, for instance - what is your family all about?

I'll send over the book to Zenita in Denmark this week.

Yikes! Had forgotten to journal this one on arrival!
I'm reading 2 ringbooks right now, but about to finish one, so I was looking at what's next. This one came up!

Journal Entry 14 by Erbie from Amsterdam, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Monday, July 18, 2005
Past halfway, and absolutely loving this uncomplicated read!

Journal Entry 15 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Wednesday, November 30, 2005
Unfortunately this book seems to be permanently stalled with Erbie. I am very sorry for everybody who was still patiently waiting (and for the people who asked me to be put on the list).
Maybe Erbie will someday move it on after all.

edit 04.01.06:
Wow, it seems, this ring can go on after all! Thank you, Erbie. :-)

Journal Entry 16 by Snoow from Lyon, Rhône-Alpes France on Tuesday, January 3, 2006

Journal Entry 17 by Snoow from Lyon, Rhône-Alpes France on Tuesday, February 14, 2006
Finished it yesterday ! Sorry for being long, but I have at least 10 rings at home still to be read...

I liked the writing and found it funny. But the plot didn't really catch me, and I didn't like this feeling of watching a Hollywood blockbuster movie.

Journal Entry 18 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Monday, February 20, 2006
The book arrived safely in Belfort (I found it yesterday when I came home after the week-end), along with anise-flavoured sweets.

Thank you Snoow!!!

Journal Entry 19 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Monday, April 3, 2006
A nice "chick litt" novel.
I enjoyed reading this book, although a few details were a little unrealistic.
It's a nice relaxing read, anyway. A little like a fairy tale!
Thank you samulli for ringing it!
I'll mail it to elegi some time this week.

"a fresh, funny feast of a novel"

Journal Entry 23 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Tuesday, July 4, 2006
I was passed this bookring book today. Unfortunately eligi didn't contact me about sending this book onto me and I had no record of signing up for it. The result being that I read this about 4 months ago and I sent my copy out on it's own bookring.

So I won't be reading it again :/

Another unfortunate problem is that I just changed jobs and have alot of stress at the moment...money and time are not something I have alot of and there are other books in front of this one that I need to send on. So this make be with me for a few weeks. Sorry but the book could have skipped me if I had been warned.

Journal Entry 24 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Saturday, July 8, 2006
I pm'd penelopewanders today and now have her address. However she will be on holiday for the next month so I will wait till the beginning of August to send it on to her.

Journal Entry 25 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Friday, July 28, 2006
Sorry for holding on to this for so long but I finally got my first pay from my new job today!! Also penelopewanders should be back from holiday soon to recieve the book!

That means that the book should be in the post sometime next week depending on when I can get to the post office!

Journal Entry 26 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Monday, August 21, 2006
Picked up the book at the post today, thank you! A few other bookring books came in during my holidays, so I'll do my best to get them all out quickly. It looks like I'm last in the ring, so I'll be sending it back to its home when I'm done. (Samulli, can you pm me your address please?) Thanks so much for making this available.

Journal Entry 27 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Sunday, August 27, 2006
I quite enjoyed this book, although I was caught unawares when it went from being witty and fun and became quite dramatic towards the end. There was a certain predictability, and it was a bit irritating that she lost all perspective on Bruce... She had, as one of her friends pointed out, decided to take a break because he really wasn't all that great, but she is incapable of acknowledging that once she's the one who has been dumped. Perhaps that's just realistic though. I very much enjoyed the character of Peter, even if he was awfully shy about making his intentions clear to Cannie (although it was pretty obvious to the reader, I think). Anyway, it was a great book to read on the train yesterday and I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks so much for making it available and for adding me to this ring. Now I think the book will travel home.

Journal Entry 28 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Wednesday, August 30, 2006
It turns out this book wants to keep travelling.. if anyone is interested in a ring or ray, let me know... as the forum is down I can't announce this there, unfortunately.

Journal Entry 31 by Zepplin from Calne, Wiltshire United Kingdom on Friday, October 6, 2006
I really enjoyed this book but it was not as laugh out funny as I was expecting. I thought the title was a bit odd. (How can I get to be a friend of a rich film star who will do up my apartment! sniff) Some of the book was really down to earth and believable and for other bits it was over the top.

The article Bruce wrote about fat girls could have been about me and my husband found it funny (luckily he was laughing with me.)

Received in the post today. Thanks Zepplin!

Journal Entry 33 by rem_JLG-206842 on Saturday, October 21, 2006
I really LOVED this book! I didn't expect to like it as much as I did but it's such a good, fun read and one which I got through so much faster than I thought I would! I didn't expect it to be a challenging book either, and it's not, but it's a bit more dramatic than I expected it to be as well! I love Cannie's character - she's so....dare, I say it?...normal. While other books like to have characters with faults , I think some go a bit too far and make the character's seem a bit forced - like Bridget Jones for example (although I do love Bridget!!) but Cannie has normal faults just like the rest of us and you can really relate to her whether you're a "larger woman" or not.

The book does have it's predictable moments and there a couple of references that I didn't get, but I'm guessing that's because I'm not American but I really, really liked it! So much so that In Her Shoes, which I didn't think was especially great when I read it, has come off my shelf and on to my TBR pile ready for another reading! Thanks for sharing penelopewanders and thanks to samulli for starting off this books journey!

I can't believe how many different places this has been to already but it'll be on it's way to clw204 by the end of next week hopefully.

I've posted the blurb below because I always like the blurb to be on the journal pages somewhere, so anybody browsing can see a bit more what the book's about.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~BLURB~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cannie Shapiro never wanted to be famous. The smart, sharp, plus-sized reporter was perfectly happy writing about other people's lives for her local newspaper. And for the past twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along quite nicely for Cannie. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her job, her friends, her dog and her life. She loves her apartment and her commodious, quilt-lined bed. She has made a tenuous peace with her body and she even felt okay about ending her relationship with her boyfriend Bruce. But now this...
'Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world,' Bruce has written in a national women's magazine. And Cannie - who never knew that Bruce saw her as a larger woman, or thought loving her was an act of courage - is plunged into misery, and the most amazing year of her life.
Candace Shapiro, Cannie, who recently dumped her ex-boyfriend, Bruce, discovers, to her horror, that she is the star of his monthly Moxie magazine column, 'Good in Bed,' in which he writes, in detail, what it was like 'Loving a Larger Woman.' After reading the article, Cannie begins to feel that dumping Bruce was a big mistake and she desperately wants him back. A brief reunion with Bruce after his father's death changes her life forever. Cannie moves on with help from her family and friends. She enrolls in a weight management program, where she meets the wonderful Dr. K, befriends Maxi, a famous actress, sells her screenplay, and, eventually, gets over Bruce. This was another enjoyable book by Jennifer Weiner with great supporting characters, family, friends, and, of course, the dog Nifkin. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy happy endings!
Thank you for sharing this book penelopewanders. I am so very sorry I kept it for so long. I will pass it on to Karenlea shortly.
The book kind of felt like several different books that clashed. On one hand, several parts of the book were very superficial and "chick-lit"ish. On the other hand, several parts of the book dealt with very serious issues and it had heart. The inconsistency bothered me. It also took me awhile to like Cannie. I didn't really like her until towards the end of the book. On a whole, I preferred Cannie's childhood flashbacks to the present day story. I simply didn't understand what she saw in Bruce. He had very few redeeming qualities.
I hope to make a post office run this week. I will repost here when I have mailed it out. Enjoy! Mailed on 3/4/08
Journal Entry 49 by sunny27 from Gympie, Queensland Australia on Wednesday, May 28, 2008
This was a book that I couldn't put down. I even caught myself stirring dinner on the stove with the book in my hand.
I really liked Canny as a character. She felt like a friend who was going through a break-up, rather than a character in a novel. The scene in the airport bathroom really got to me. At the end of that page I had to put the book down for a couple of days. I think I had to prepare myself for the possiblility of a twist in the plot. I think that's a sign of a really good writer, even if the novel is likely to be dismissed as 'chick lit'.
A look at the authors website revealed that a sequel to Good in Bed has just been published and the first chapter was available to read. It looks like this is Joy's story and there were a few surprises that made me very keen to read the book.
Thanks so much for sharing this little treasure. It's been passed across the bed to JDBikerfella, who's more than half way through and seems very absorbed.
Journal Entry 50 by JDBikerfella from Gympie, Queensland Australia on Thursday, June 26, 2008
"Good in Bed" was passed across the bed from my best girl, warning me it was a bit of a chick book (what's the literary equivalent of a chick flick)? Indeed, it certainly started out that way, building the main character (Cannie) through detailing her struggle with life, aspirations, boyfriends, family, work and a constant battle with body image. I couldn't help thinking, as a first-time author, the story was a very personal chronicle for Jennifer Weiner. The book really started getting interesting when Cannie decides to take a break from her boyfriend who then publicly exposes their past sex life, her work situation looks up, yet she has to deal with an unexpected pregnancy with a twist. The book morphed from a chick book in the beginning to a compelling read for any bloke that's been in a relationship...
I am now halfway through this book and like it a lot so far. I did expect a few more funny moments and a heroine with less burdens in life. The fact that this isn't chick lit of the shallow kind makes it a good book though.
Edit November 10th:
I have now finished this book. It was a good book, but I didn't like it - If that makes sense ... ? The storyline was a little too sad for my taste, although I liked the overall feeling of hope and that it'll all get better if you hang in there during hard times, that was transported through the entire book. I also liked and admired Cannie's strength a lot: definitely a role model for people experiencing some bad luck in life.
