Journal Entry 1 by Sidney1220 from McLean, Virginia USA on Monday, March 15, 2004
Bought this book at a used bookstore today. This is my first trip to a used bookstore and I was really glad to find a copy of this book that still looked new. (I have been reluctant to shop at used bookstores in the past because I prefer my books new). I will definitely be going back there in the future.

From the back... When it comes to men, beauty columnist Rebecca Fine always seems t be on the scruffy end of the mascara wand. But all that changes te morning she meets Max Stoddart, her new colleague at the Daily Vanguard. With his upscale suit, Hugh Grant hair and obscenely sexy good looks, he's a single woman's dream come true. Finally, her grandmother can stop surfing the Net for eligible Jewish males. But is Max the catch of the decade- or just a major babe magnet? Meanwhile, Rebecca's old high school nemesis has resurfaced, a former blond bombshell called Lipstick who is now engaged to Rebecca's widowed dad. And it's good-bye to articles on toe cleavage when a hot tip sweeps Rebecca to the center of the Paris cosmetics world, where a miracle antiwrinkle cream is about to be launched. That is, until she blows the whistle on a scandal that could set the beauty business- and the future of world peace- reeling. Will Rebecca win the recognition- not to mention the Pulitzer- she yearns for...and get the man of her dreams? Stay tuned. ______________________________________________________________________ As for as British chit lits go, this one breaks no new ground. It is not even as interesting as some of the others I've read. There's not much characterization, the heroine's ditzy beyond belief, and the romantic plotline included a big misunderstanding with outcomes you can see from a mile away. It's available for trade if anybody wants it...

Chick-lit is fine when it doesn't stray into implausible situations. The combination of the face cream mystery (I won't give it away), the step-mother to be who is also the school days arch enemy with some past lives regression (to JFK no less) makes it not as good a read as it might have been. Not to mention that the lead male character always seemed a bit 'off' to me. About the only thing in his favor seems to be his looks and the heroine seems much too intelligent for that to be the deciding factor.

As others here have said, this book has little substance. The story is farfetched, the characters are not very well-developed, the plot seems implausible, etc. However, I have to say that I enjoyed this book in spite of these flaws. It's an example of what I like to call an "escape" novel, a book that allows the reader to escape from her own life for awhile and simply be mindlessly entertained. This book couldn't have arrived at a better time in my life -- if there was any week I needed to escape, this was it! Thanks, awakeagain, for starting this bookray! I'm setting this as "reserved" until I can get to the post office to mail it to BelleMorte -- which will likely be tomorrow.

this was not chicklit. it was boring, lol. She kept on making the same mistakes over and over again and I just wanted to bash her head into a wall. This wasnt an endearing kinda character, it was an annoying and heck one. interesting story, but coulda deff been written better. shame on her editor. sending to SpaceyStacey as soon as i have an addy +kil+

Received in the post this weekend. 5/21/05 A read in a day kind of "escape" novel. I found the pages turned quickly as I read it in one sitting at the Wildwood beach yesterday. Can't say that any of the characters are particularly memorable, but I did enjoy Bernadette a.k.a "Lipstick". No readers on this ray after me, so I am including it in lilmztaz's "turning 30" bookbox for its continuing journey.

A quick, fun, light read! I enjoyed it even though the characters were shallow and the plot/sub-plots were pretty unrealistic. I picked this one off my TBR stack because I needed something fluffy after some of the murder/suspense/thrillers...
