7 out of 10

I got this fair-condition softcover from Better World Books. It includes historical mysteries by a variety of authors, including Alan Gordon of the Fools Guild series.

I enjoyed this collection very much, with its varied settings and tones. Among my favorites:

"His Master's Servant" by Philip Boast mixes the strife of the Crusades with more personal culture clashes and a mysterious murder.

Gordon's "The Jester and the Mathematician" features his wonderful "Fool's Guild" characters, but here Theophilos is writing his memoirs in his advanced years. The tale itself flashes back to before he married, when he met a fellow named Fibonacci in a town called Pisa - where, yes, a lovely new bell-tower is experiencing some issues with its verticality, something that is worked into the plot in a darkly amusing way.

"The Dutchman and the Wrongful Heir" by Maan Meyers is set in the days when New Amsterdam has just become New York, and features an intricate crime and some practical methods of dealing with it.

"The Gentleman on the Titanic" by John Lutz manages to mix an effective romance with an espionage story, all set on board the doomed liner.

And there's much more!
