The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest.

The book arrived in today's mail in very good condition. I just finished reading a book and was trying to decide, "what's next?" This is a new author to me and I'm always eager to try, "something new." Thanks, Icila!

Book arrived today. I'm currently reading another book I just started this morning, but it's on my Kindle app so I'll likely start this one soon and read it at home and the Kindle book at work.

Journal Entry 6 by wingAramenawing at Moore, Oklahoma USA on Sunday, March 4, 2018
I finished this book last week but have been so busy at work it's just been sitting on my desk. I really enjoyed it. Going into it I didn't really know anything about it, and it was certainly different! It was pretty captivating, and I like the author's writing style.

I'll get this mailed out to JudySlump612 tomorrow!

This is exactly what I was hoping for when I joined the Favourite Book Roundabout: a title I would probably never have picked up for myself, but which turned out to be very enjoyable. It was imaginative, funny, and a good modernization of the classic fantasy quest adventure story. Also, I agree with Aramena in liking the author's style. He was always finding new ways to describe things and give us new insights. I especially liked his comparison between reading and listening to a book. I'm not sure I agree, but the image is so persuasive I'm going along with it.

Mailed to Mathgirl40 for the Favourite Book of 2017 Roundabout

This book is now with me. It's one that I've read already, but I liked it a lot the first time and am looking forward to a reread!

Journal Entry 11 by mathgirl40 at Waterloo, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, April 17, 2018
I really enjoyed my reread of this novel. Since I'd last read it several years ago, Google had opened an office near my home in Kitchener-Waterloo. I've visited the office several times and have friends who work there, and the Google culture is certainly compatible with that described in the novel. I especially like that the novel celebrates new technology while showing appreciation of the old.

I've heard about this book, so I was excited to receive it in the roundabout. Also, the front cover gloves in the dark, how cool is that!

The opening chapter is amazing, with rich description of the bookstore and a hint of mystery. It goes downhill from that. It is not a fantasy - it's an adventure. I wish the author wrote about what he knows - all the attempts to add "realistic" details to the story just alienated me. The book picked up in the last quarter, when we are back talking about the bookstore. I rated it 2 stars.

Is going to earthcaroleanne next.

Where else can you read about ideas from the forefront of modern computing together with the history of the printed word? It draws you in slowly rather than throwing you in two feet first until you are incapable of putting the book down. I did actually tut and huff when I had to stop reading. The diversity of the characters is fantastic, each complimenting the other in ways you would least expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. Plus it would be nice if we all had a friend like Neel.
Thanks to the person who put in the post-it re Frank Gehry. I looked up some of his buildings (on Google of course) and they are amazing.

Received - thank you. I might just hold of reading it for a couple of weeks, as I know there's a little bit of a logjam further along in the roundabout, so hopefully that will even it out a little ;)

Journal Entry 20 by wingdark-dracowing at Ledbury, Herefordshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 1, 2018
I can't remember the last time I used this word, but what a 'delightful' book to read!

It's a mild mannered, gentle conspiracy theory, secret society mystery, with a bunch of characters that, although a bit odd, are instantly likable and very real. I loved the whole books vs technology debate, or, as Sloan describes it, the OK (old Knowledge) vs NK (new Knowledge). And while books don't exactly win (boo, hiss), neither does the almighty technology.

I can't actually find anything that I didn't like - I guess the only reason it didn't earn top stars was it is a little bit on the tame side for me. But still loved it and look forward to seeing if there will be any more Penumbra adventures.

Really enjoyed reading this, it even took over the other books I had started!
I liked the simple narrative style and the adventure/search plot. A story about books is often very interesting, so I was not disappointed.
Thanks for sharing, Icila!
