I found this slim softcover at the local library's annual book sale. It contains the script of Michael Burton's adaptation of Goethe's fairy tale, and also includes the text of the fairy tale itself as translated by Thomas Carlyle.

While I usually enjoy variations-on-fairy-tales, I admit I found this one - both the original and the play - a bit too convoluted for my taste. Even Marjorie Spock's essay, also in this book, on the values of deep conversations (a theme of the fairy tale and the play) didn't draw me in... My favorite part of this book was Michael Burton's description of the process of creating a play from the source material, and the ideas for different types of staging, props, and costumes.

I plan to leave this book, bagged against the elements, near the Court Street Theater building (home of the Peacock Players) at around 12:30; hope the finder enjoys it!
