Diggers is a clever, entertaining take on the trope of tiny people living in secret alongside humans (or under their floorboards). These little people, nomes, are aliens who are stranded on Earth and have made the best of it, living for generations under the floorboards of a department store until it was demolished at some point in the past and they were forced to venture out into the (very large) world and make a new home in an old quarry. Mostly, they just try to stay out of the way of humans, which until lately has been easy -- us big lugs being so blissfully unaware of our surroundings. But the humans have come to reopen the quarry, and the nomes realize they can't stay hidden any longer.

I like the differing personalities of the nomes and their hilarious misunderstandings about human language, activities, and customs. And the allusions to Gulliver and the Liliputians are apt.

This fun, lighthearted book turns out to be the second in a trilogy. I didn't realize that when I started reading without having read the first book. But it didn't matter. This works just fine as a standalone book.

Written for the YA market, but a fun read for anyone.

I've enjoyed pretty much all of the Terry Pratchett books I've read, so when I saw this at today's meeting, I picked it up to read.

This book was registered in memory of my daughter, who was killed on 30 August 2010 in a tragic accident.

Six months after fleeing their former home in a department store, the Nomes have settled into a new life in an abandoned quarry. Life here isn't as comfortable and requires more work, but here they are safe from humans. Or so it seems, at least until a notice is posted on the quarry gate ordering it to be reopened. Faced with the prospect of more humans, the Nomes (who are only four inches tall) must decide what to do next.

While this book was written with a young reader audience in mind, Pratchett has filled this tall with some serious satire that will appeal to readers much older than the target audience. It is certainly easy to see analogues to the arguments in this story in any number of contemporary settings. In addition, Pratchett does an excellent job of extrapolating how our world would appear to someone encountering it for the first time, with comic effect. The result is an entertaining book that can be enjoyed on a plurality of levels.

I'm setting this aside to release in my Little Free Library.
