2 journalers for this copy...
I found this good-condition hardcover at a local Salvation Army Thrift Shop, and picked it up for another release copy.
The book is a hilarious look at food-styling and popular culture, as seen through recipe booklets - most of them produced by specific food companies as advertising.
Some of the images show how times have changed; the one of the supermarket with a cluster of babies-in-strollers gathered out front while their mothers shop inside is not something that's encouraged today!
Most of the book highlights some truly funny/horrifying recipes, from "Benedictish Frankwiches" (sliced franks on muffins topped with hollandaise, cheese - and a sprinkle of MSG) to the charming "Balls on Picks" recipes for appetizers, including "Green Balls" (cheese, ham, and egg, rolled in minced chives) and "Burning Bush" (cream cheese, minced onion, rolled in minced dried beef). Some of the photos include the original captions, while others are described by Lileks in very snarky style; my only quibble was that sometimes I couldn't tell from the page layout which bits were original and which were his! (Though reading them generally cleared this up.)
The jello-mold section has some truly appalling items, including one that appears to contain either pasta (?) or finely-shredded cabbage (or other thin pale substance), along with chopped celery and peppers, all in some kind of transparent gelatin (flavor unspecified). Just looking at it is painful.
A few items were actually not that strange; the stuffed-head-of-cabbage is something my mother actually served us now and then, and wasn't bad, though as pictured here it does look rather science-fiction-ish. But most of them were awful-looking, awful-sounding, and often rather... suggestive, especially when involving whole frankfurters sticking out of some stew or gelatin mold. (I am NOT making this up.)
