The Painted Girls

1878 Paris. Following their father's death, the van Goethem sisters entered the Paris Opera to train as ballet dancers, a job that doesn't pay high but preferable over other back-bending employment. Marie, the younger sister, meets an artist who is interested in painting the dancers. (When the artist suggests Marie to go to his studio, my first thought was, he sounds like a pedophile! lol) Turns out he's Edgar Degas!! (Not that famous artists can't have morally dubious character...)
It's an engaging read, and for a while the lives of the two sisters sink deeper and deeper into trouble, I have to keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Thank you for the wishlist book Azuki! It was great to meet you at the convention.
I read the book on my journey back to the UK. The author has a lovely lyrical writing style. I very much enjoyed this book.

Thank you to my friend Poodlesister for passing this on. It has been on my to read list for some time.
I loved this book, one of my favourites in 2017, for me a perfect mix of social history with the arts, and set in Paris too. A good and obviously well researched story, sad in places, from which I learned much about the hard lives of the girls who danced at the Paris Opéra and a little of Edgar Dégas, the much celebrated painter of dancers, among other subjects. I would certainly seek out more books in a similar vein by this author.
Since I read it I've given it to two friends who have returned it to me! Now passed on to Christine, a fellow clergy spouse, on our weekend away at Chelmsford Diocesan Retreat House, Pleshey
