I got this handsome hardcover at Toadstool Books in Milford NH. I love Brett's artwork, and this variation on a Russian folk tale looks like fun.
As always, the borders of each page are loaded with lovely details, from carved-wood edgings to turnip-shaped cutouts with mini-images inside. The main illustrations feature a cheerful community of animals in lovely folk costumes, cooperating to try and pull up the gigantic turnip that has grown in Badger Girl's field.
The badgers and their friends grow more desperate as the snow begins to fall, but the way in which the turnip eventually gets out of the ground is unexpected and very funny. And then it's turnip pancakes for all!
