Billy is on vacation with his mom at a lakeside rental owned by her colleague from the math department, Dr. Libris. It includes his book collection, and use of an island in the middle of the lake. Because his mom is busy working on her dissertation, Billy is left to his own devices and soon learns that the stories in the books come alive on the island. He becomes involved in a search for treasure, but the prize may be deceptive. To get to the bottom of what is happening on the island, Billy discovers the importance of imagination and the stories of our lives.
