I found this good-condition softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's a kind of "Pinocchio" story, in which an android in the form of a teenage girl is admitted to a local high school by her creator, in hopes that she'll collect data on how she interacts with the world. But the first thing she wants to do is to be able to taste food the way the other kids do. Thus begins her series of make-me-more-human requests, with her bemused creator going along with it - for a while.

There are some nice notes here, especially when Odette learns that having super robot powers might come in handy at times. And the viewpoint shifts to the professor and his colleagues, who are apparently all working on android development and have a lot to discuss - while a teen-boy-shaped android pays Odette a visit... This part of the story takes a dark turn as the colleagues desribe some of the more deadly cases: androids used as bombs, for example, or used as tools for defusing same. There's considerable tension here, resolved quickly and in a touching manner.

And then Odette tries to defend a schoolmate from bullies, only to have him discover that she's an android - and to be quite a jerk about it, demanding that she befriend him and generally behaving in an unpleasant manner. Flashbacks to his back-story show why he's this way, but can he change?

And there's more - quite a lot of interesting storylines in this volume.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series.]

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I put it back where I found it. I enjoyed it at first but about halfway through I stopped enjoying it, and since I don't intend to buy any future sequels, I just skimmed through the rest. I found the author's "sidebars" very distracting. Maybe if she'd waited for chapter breaks to "talk" to the reader it would have been less intrusive, but when you're immersed in a story, you don't want the author interrupting.
