Kateryn Parr, a thirty-year-old widow in a secret affair with a new lover, has no choice when a man old enough to be her father who has buried four wives - King Henry VIII - commands her to marry him.

Kateryn has no doubt about the danger she faces: the previous queen lasted sixteen months, the one before barely half a year. But Henry adores his new bride and Kateryn's trust in him grows as she unites the royal family, creates a radical study circle at the heart of the court, and rules the kingdom as Regent.

But is this enough to keep her safe? A leader of religious reform and the first woman to publish in English, Kateryn stands out as an independent woman with a mind of her own. But she cannot save the Protestants, under threat for their faith, and Henry's dangerous gaze turns on her.The traditional churchmen and rivals for power accuse her of heresy - the punishment is death by fire and the king's name is on the warrant...

From an author who has described all of Henry's queens comes a deeply intimate portrayal of the last: a woman who longed for passion, power and education at the court of a medieval killer.

Received in the post today as a RABCK from Winterbirth. Thanks very much-I think this completes my set starting with The Other Boleyn Girl so I can now read them in order. Will look forward to reading this one.

REVIEW:- "I've been gradually working my way through this series of books which starts with The Other Boleyn Girl. I did enjoy this one but I found it very hard-going at times due to the over-load of theology involved. It was quite repetitious at times and I got bogged down with all the toing and froing between Catholicism and Church of England. It certainly gave a good explanation of the mind set of Henry VIII which was very frightening both from the point of view of religion and in general.
Having said the above I love how Philippa Gregory gets inside the skin of her main character -Katherine Parr in this case-and writes completely from their point of view.
I shall definitely go on to read the other books in the series but will need a break in between".

I am reserving the book for another bookcrosser. ETA-the bookcrosser I had in mind didn't want the book so it's now heading in a different direction. (For more information about the Cameo Café please see nwdementiasupportgroup, org.uk)

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.
