Jondalar and Ayla have left their home and are making a short journey with their two horses, Racer and Whinney, but they come across the Mamatoi, 'The Mammoth Hunters'. At first the tribe are suspicious of them, but eventually they are taken back to their winter camp. For Ayla, being round so many people is unusual and frightening, but as she starts to learn the language and the customs, she begins to fit in. Finally adopted to them, she is drawn to the Mamut as she was to her old friend Creb, and also to the half Clan, half human boy Rydag. Everyone believes him to be a stupid animal, but once she has 'reminded' him of the Clan's sign language, the whole tribe is soon speaking it. As the winter months continue, she is coveted by Ranec and goes to his bed. Jondalar, jealous and full of pride, turns from her and a winter of misunderstandings ensue. With the coming of the Spring, comes the annual Clan gathering, where more than one thing comes to a head.

This is a huge book and contains a vivid, addictive, but somewhat convuluted plot. It is not always an easy read, you end up wanting to shake both characters as they repeatedly act like idiots, but by the end you are just as much entralled as at the start. A fantastic continuation of the series.
