I enjoyed The Janissary Tree, the first in the "Yashim" series about an early-19th-century eunuch who acts as detective for the sultan, so I was pleased to find this book, next in the series, at the Used Book Superstore in Burlington.
In this volume, it's 1838, and the old sultan is dying, suggesting the possibility of great upheaval when the succession kicks in. Meanwhile, a French archaeologist arrives, seeking ancient treasures - and then turns up dead and mutilated, with Yashim as a chief suspect!
Lots of period detail, intrigue, and entertaining dialogue.
