I first heard of this intriguing boy-detective manga series from its TV Tropes page, and have been picking up volumes as I find them. (This one's a duplicate copy, but when I came across it at the Used Book Superstore in Burlington MA I couldn't resist nabbing it.)
The pattern of the story will be familiar to mystery fans - young Kindaichi gets drawn in to a seemingly simple situation, only to discover a murder, with more deaths to follow as the wrong people are suspected and conflicting clues come to light. In this particular book, he's caught up in the making of a "shock TV" show, where guests are supposedly fooled into thinking there are actual horrors around - but people aren't supposed to start dying...
To complicate matters, there's a hot-shot detective in town, one who has a pretty low opinion of amateur sleuths, and of course Kindaichi's pride won't allow him to let the detective solve the case first!
As with most of the books in this series, it turns out that the killer has some very strong motives, and at least some of the victims may not be as innocent as they seem. And there's a delightfully obscure explanation for some of the "snow demon's" trickier appearances and disappearances. Fun!
[There's an anime based on the books.]
