Journal Entry 1 by BOOKWORMINUSALL on Thursday, March 9, 2017
Friends of the Library Purchase (second copy) made with Flat Stanley for him to take home with him for Snugglebunny in England.

With Spring Baseball well on the way here in Mesa, Arizona, USA, Flat Stanley was curious to see what all the hubbub was about. It was pretty cloudy and a bit windy, which gave us a break from the unusually hot and sunny weather we've been experiencing, so we went to see the spring training home of the Oakland A’s...and we didn't even need our sunglasses, sunscreen, or our baseball caps! This Journal Entry shows a picture of Flat Stanley checking out one of the signs next to where we parked. The famous Hohokam Stadium http://www.mesaaz.gov/things-to-do/hohokam-stadium used to be the home of the Chicago Cubs, but they built a new Stadium (Sloan Park) a few years ago. https://www.visitmesa.com/things-to-do/spring-training/cubs-park

Journal Entry 3 by BOOKWORMINUSALL at Mesa, Arizona USA on Sunday, March 19, 2017
The day we visited the Hohokam Stadium, there was no baseball game being played. We couldn't even buy a ticket because the ticket counters were closed.

See Flat Stanley there in the middle of the window on the right of the picture as you look at it?

Journal Entry 5 by BOOKWORMINUSALL at Mesa, Arizona USA on Sunday, March 19, 2017
Flat Stanley is trying to get a closer look at the schedule to see when there will be a game being played at this Stadium.

Journal Entry 6 by BOOKWORMINUSALL at Mesa, Arizona USA on Monday, March 20, 2017
With the stadium closed and no baseball to be seen, Flat Stanley decided to have some fun climbing a tree. It's almost Spring here, and if you look closely, you can see the leaf buds starting to open. It is a rather windy day, and you can also see some storm clouds in the background, which means our tree climbing fun is over. It is never wise to be climbing trees, nor standing under or near them during a storm. Trees attract lightning because they are tall and filled with moisture. They provide a path for the lightning to travel from the storm cloud to the ground. We sometimes have dry lighting when a dry thunderstorm rolls in. A dry thunderstorm has thunder and lightning, but no rain because the water evaporates before it hits the ground. Dry lightning causes many fires. You can read more about dry thunderstorms here...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_thunderstorm

With the Hohokam Stadium Closed, and such a nice cool Sunday (3/5/17) to enjoy, we decided to visit another "Hohokam" place (that word is used a lot in Mesa and the surrounding area, as the Hohokam were prehistoric North American Indians who lived here many years ago), the Park Of Canals, for an archeological walk to see the ancient Hohokam water canals, the desert garden, and for a swing on the swing. We didn't know that it was closed on Sundays. Flat Stanley isn't in this picture. ; ) https://www.visitmesa.com/listing/park-of-the-canals/285

This link has more information, and a map of the Park of Canals in the middle of the City (scroll down a bit), that helps you see part of the canal system when you zoom into the aerial view.

Most scientists believe the Hohokam arrived in Arizona from Mexico around 300 B.C. That was a VERy LONG time ago! You can read a little more about the Hohokam Indians, who are also known as Prehistoric Peoples, and/or Southwest Native American People, in this link from ASU...the famous Arizona State University in Tempe close to Mesa. Perhaps MissMarkey will be able to print out the information sheet, and the fun little Quiz for you to take. ; ) http://alliance.la.asu.edu/geomath/lizfinaledits/Warren,%20Carol/Relying/WarrenRelyingS.pdf

You can read more about the College where you can come study here. https://www.asu.edu

Journal Entry 8 by BOOKWORMINUSALL at Mesa, Arizona USA on Monday, March 20, 2017
Flat Stanley and I are deTERmined to have some FUN on this beautiful Sunday, so even though many things will be closed and it's already late in the afternoon, there will still be many fun sights to see, so we've decided to turn our day into a Tour of the City!!! We're headed DOWNTOWN, to exPLORE!!! Just look who we found standing on the corner of Center Street and Main in the photo of this Journal Entry. It's W. Larkin Fitch, in life size sculpture form, with a shovel like we used yesterday when planting our Mammoth Russian Sunflower seeds!!! Check out the Journal Entries for this book to read more about it!!! The Sunflower Farmer (Read-it! Readers: Science) by Jessica Gunderson
http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/14434590

Flat Stanley was a little uncertain about the Gopher with the very large teeth coming up out of the ground at the base of the sculpture near the description plate, but I assured him that he wasn't real and would not hurt him. Originally the sculptures were a temporary project on loan by various artists, but in recent years they have been permanently installed all around Downtown Mesa. You can look at photographs of the other sculptures (we won't be able to walk to see all of them) and see where they are located here. http://www.downtownmesa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Sculpture-Guide-legal1.pdf

If the file doesn't come up for some reason, you can click on the tab for the Sculpture Guide at the bottom of this link http://www.downtownmesa.com/sculptures.

This sculpture of W. Larkin Fitch (#37 on the guide), is called The Wall Street Farmer. It shows him using a shovel because he owned and farmed the land where Fitch Park sits just down the street. Fitch Park is the home of Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics spring training workout facility, not too far down the street from Hohokam Stadium where we visited earlier.

While we were visiting with Mr. Fitch and his gopher, we heard what sounded like bells ringing, and were excited to see that the Light Rail was passing by...how fun is that?! : D There's a photo of it in this Journal Entry. It just connected to the City of Mesa in August of 2015. You can read more about it here. http://www.valleymetro.org/getting_on_board/hours_mlr

It comes from all the way from the City of Phoenix, which is the Capital of Arizona. It opened there in 2009. You can hear the sounds, and see more in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5ptFRDMN-M

Just had the idea of transposing two numbers to get the correct BCID and Bingo, it worked ( and fitted in better with the other BCID's in the batch of books sent to my library club).
Thank you so much for sending this book ( and all the others) . You are a star. I hope that I get to meet you for real one day.
