Everything Is Illuminated
1 journaler for this copy...
A book that I recently acquired for the purposes of giving it away at an upcoming book festival with my friends in BCinDC.
My earlier review of this book : A friend of mine lent me her copy of this book and told me it was one of the top 10 books of all time. I really struggled to get through it because it was a little too full of sexual references for me and I could not figure out how the different threads would come together. I mentioned that to another friend and she said the book was awful and boring. Made me feel better.
I would not say it was awful or boring and I did see where it was going somewhat, but would not make my top 10 list. Some of the points, about memory and tradition and the sad mundane aspects of life that were eliminated by the Holocaust, were quite good and well made, and the ties that bind us all together and to some extent the points about writing. I just think they could have been executed in a more interesting fashion and with less discussion of the intimate sexual experiences of all of Jonathan's ancestors. I liked the story of Yankel and his love for Brod -- I found the discussion of the religious history of the Uprights and the Slouchers amusing -- and I enjoyed the way Alex mangled language and was so devoted to Little Igor. It just was more of kindergartner's collage than a coherent story.
