I found this good-condition hardcover in the Little Free Library in Malden, MA, while dropping off some books of my own. This one fits a current release challenge and looks like a good story. (It's already done some traveling, too. One flyleaf inscription is a "Merry Christmas" wish to Matthew, circa 2005, and another is to Aoife, circa 2013!)

The story's a good one, a mix of realistic raven-behavior and proper care-and-handling, with some semi-supernatural incidents (all discussed in-story). From a Souix friend, young Charlie gets the idea to capture a young raven from a nest in order to help cure his beloved grandfather's health. Turns out Grandpa is a registered wild-bird rehabilitator, so this doesn't immediately turn into a case of illegal-capture-of-wild-bird {wry grin} - and Grandpa cleverly starts teaching Charlie about making an actual case-study of the raven and its interactions with humans. This turns into some entertaining scenes, such as one in which the raven sounds the alarm when a mountain lion approaches - but Grandpa gets Charlie to admit that, as ravens sometimes alert predators to prey in hopes of getting their share, the bird could have been telling the lion about the human as easily as warning the human about the lion!

While there's a bittersweet ending to the story, I appreciated its mostly-realistic turn - it appreciates the many abilities of ravens without turning them into something they are not, and lets its human characters learn the same thing (even the guy who starts the story hating ravens).
