I got this fair-condition hardcover from Better World Books. (Some of the pages had been written on in pencil by a previous young owner; I've tried to erase the text, as the whole point of the book is that the reader can make up their own story from the pictures alone!)

I think the illustrations tell a pretty clear tale, but readers are free to put their own spin on things. My take is that a boy and girl, romping noisily in the woods, are pestering the animals - a turtle gets upturned, a bird chased - and pursue the harried bird up a mountain, where an angry shaman takes apt vengeance on the kids. Their fates after that should teach them a lesson about being kind to others...

Some pretty dramatic twists and turns here, all done via the full-page images, which are based on kamishibai ("paper theater") performances by storytellers. There's bonus material and further reading for the grownups, and the tantalizing images for the kids. Good book!

I left this book in the Little Free Library at around 2:45; hope the finder enjoys it!
