It is so difficult to describe this book. Is it a novel, or a philosophical essay, or a bildungnsroman, or a travel book, or a spiritual book? I guess that the answer it is a bit all of the above and then some more.

Robert M. Pirsig and his teenaged son Chris start a motorbike trip across the USA. During the first part of the trip they are accompanied by a couple of technology haters that can't keep their motorbike in a minimal condition upkeep. This makes Robert wonder, and he finds explanation to it. Now, I have to say, if I only took this first half in consideration, this book would have got a 10 out of 10.

The second part happens when Robert and Chris go on their trip on their own. Here, the past of "Phaedrus", as Robert names himself before having a psychological breakdown interferes completely with the trip. There is a lot of philosophical digressions and too little of the relationship between Chris and Robert, and even less about the trip.

I wouldn't mind going on a road trip across USA after reading this book.
