I found this slightly-battered '60s-era paperback at a local thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy.

Wyndham's the author of such nihilistic SF/fantasy novels as Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos, both of which have inspired films (with varying degrees of success), and I've enjoyed other short stories of his, such as the Consider Her Ways collection.

This one opens with a note "to teachers and parents", recommending this book as one on which to practice "the neglected art of reading short stories", going on to talk about the order of the stories, etc. I admit that I seldom pay attention to the sequence of tales in an anthology, unless the stories themselves are connected in some way, so it was an interesting idea.

The stories here are an interesting mix, some with whimsy, some with depth. The first story, "Chinese Puzzle", deals with the appearance of a Chinese dragon's egg in rural Wales. "UNA" has a frivolous tone but a potentially disturbing theme, with the characters themselves referring to the obvious similarities to "Island of Dr. Moreau". "Heaven Scent" has to do with adding powerful behavioral-changing chemicals to perfume. And more; there are post-apocalyptic fables, be-careful-what-you-wish-for stories, and dark little what-might-happen-if tales.

[There's a short TV Tropes page on Wyndham and his work.]
