I spotted this slim softcover at Barnes and Noble, and pounced on it - it fits a current release challenge perfectly, being themed on the Eastern Zodiac! (It's a graphic-novel adaptation of a young-adult series.)
The first few pages of this volume are devoted to describing the characters, with six on the "good guys" team - plus one fellow who's defecting from the bad guys, if only our heroes can trust him - and six more on the bad-guys team, few of whom we see in this volume. The story opens in mid-crisis, with three of the good guys - Liam (the ram), Roxanne (the rooster) and Duane (the pig) - aboard a runaway TGV (high-speed train) in France, as they try to find a way to stop it before disaster ensues. Overhead, potential defectee Malik (the ox) flies the group's plane - but the team doesn't trust him yet and tells him to simply stay close and do nothing, frustrating him.
We get some flashbacks, one showing how he joined the team, and another showing Roxanne's mixed emotions - she likes using her power (a sonic scream!) to help save lives, but she's always wanted to be a musician and misses spending time performing. Other team members have left in the past - will she be the next?
For a slim volume, there's a fair amount of action and character development, with the suspense over whether Malik will betray them or come to the rescue - and whether they can stop the train without harming its passengers.
