I found this good-condition softcover at the Book Cellar. It's a collection of essays on birds and the outdoors, with illustrations by Wesley W. Bates. The author admires some birds and does NOT admire others - the first essay is about starlings, those raucous, invasive birds, and the author mentions with ill-concealed delight the way Rex Stout devised a recipe for starlings in polenta sauce, to be served to his gourmet detective Nero Wolfe {wry grin}.

Most of the essays deal with birds in the wild, whether it's shore birds coping with habitat issues or forest birds entrancing the author - but there are some domesticated ones too, such as the zebra finches, which he describes as loud, pushy, and the perfect "starter" bird, as "you have to be an utterly incompetent finch-keeper if your zebra finches do not reproduce".

The bright splash of a cardinal against the snow, the aerodynamics of birds as derived from early fossils, a Hopi ritual involving the capture and sacrifice of a young eagle, the surprisingly-tame roadrunner that would wander into their New Mexico house...
