I found this fair-condition paperback at a local Savers thrift shop. It's a stand-alone novel, not one of Peters' "Amelia Peabody" series, though it does feature a heroine with a strong interest in Egyptology.

I have to say that I didn't like the characters here; nearly everyone, from narrator Althea to her father's former co-workers to the side characters, were testy and prickly at the best of times. Granted, most of them had some background cause, whether it was Althea's ongoing grief over her father's death ten years before amid a cloud of suspicion that he'd faked a valuable artifact, or the more malevolent motives of other characters. Still, it made for unpleasant reading whenever there was some dialogue, and it made the final fall-into-his-arms scene really strained.

That said, I liked the *plot*, if not the characters - improbable as some aspects were, I enjoyed the find-the-absolutely-coolest-lost-tomb-of-all bits intriguing. And I winced - along with the archaeologist characters - at each description of another priceless artifact being damaged due to careless tomb-looting and/or deliberate mayhem.

So, for me, this was a "skim through the dialogue and get to the descriptions-of-Egypt bits".
