I really enjoy this dark comedy series, so when I saw this omnibus edition of the first three books on sale, I grabbed it to Bookcross. After reading the latest volumes, it was kind of fun to go back to the beginning and see the team starting out. Some of them play off each other almost instantly, and others are taking longer to gel. Yamazaki's art is pretty much the same, but I do think he has refined his character designs as the series goes on.

One thing that threw me a little bit when I first started reading is that this is basically three books bound into one cover, so some of the notes seem kind of repetitive and (as someone who really enjoys reading the translator's notes as I read through the story) it was kind of awkward to try and flip back and forth when the notes were located in the middle of the book. If you enjoy reading this way, I recommend an extra bookmark to save time spent hunting for the page you need.

When I picked the book from the manga book box I did so because the back summary sounded interesting. Azuki pushed me to read it recently by making it my May 2017 pick it for me pick. I started reading ysterday and finished it this afternoon. I absolutely loved it! The artwork was amazing, and the stories really good. I liked the episodic nature of the story telling on this one, and though I'm not a huge horror story fan I really enjoyed this omnibus.

Thanks for adding it to spacedog's book box as I probably would nor have stumbled across this one otherwise.

I've read this series - and loved it! - so I'm leaving this omnibus edition in the bookbox for someone else, but did want to add my thoughts:

Volume One

Volume Two

Volume Three

In addition to the darkly comic/horror/mystery stories, I enjoy the artwork - including the whimsical chapter-heading illustrations - and the editor's wonderful translation notes. Great series!

Suprisingly thought it was just ok.

When he looked up again Tas had gone. Rising to join the others, he caught sight of something small and abandoned on the floor. "Tas you forgot your pipe." He picked it up and then saw words carved into the wood he had not seen before. Find the music, find the magic.
"Did you carve this?"
Tas did not turn. "Yes," he said, reluctantly. "I have to leave it."
"But, Tas, why?"
Tas squared his shoulders as though firming some resolve. But still he did not turn. "Because the shepherd said that it could only be used once. Thats why I can't get the pipe to play that song-or any song. I've used the magic." He took a deep breath and went on. "And he said that once I found the magic I had the pass the pipe on." he paused and then he did turn, a scamp's humor in his long brown eyes. "It's going to be a long winter. I'm going to leave it here for someone else to find."
