I found this slightly-battered softcover at a local Savers thrift shop, and thought it looked interesting - a medieval mystery, with a nicely-gruesome cover! [Turns out the cover-pic is quite misleading - it's an actual prosthetic toe from an Egyptian mummy, nothing to do with medieval times at all. The book does feature a corpse with an injury to its foot-bones, but no prosthetic. Ah, well, this wouldn't be the first time a cover didn't match the story!]

I enjoyed this rather lightweight story, which had some appealing characters and an assortment of plot twists - including one in which our hero helps to get the wrong suspect convicted and has to scramble to try and fix things before it's too late.

The way he got dragged into investigations in the first place had to do with his skill as a medical man - doing a favor to a lord results in that lord expecting greater things from him, which could take him to new heights in his personal and professional life but could go very wrong if he can't follow through. That said, his new patron seems to be a thoughtful, open-minded fellow, so Hugh may do well...

At the end of the book, the author describes aspects of the story taken from history, including quite a few of the characters in this setting. Hugh and other fictional folk were woven in rather well, I thought.
