This is the second time I have read this book and I enjoyed it both times.
Four women from China, all from different circumstances and unknown to each other, come to America around 1950. Each woman has a daughter born in America. The women become friends and get together weekly for mah jong, investing in the stock market, eating, friendship and storytelling.
We hear each woman's story before coming to America, and then each mother and daughter's stories in America.
It is both universal in the mother/daughter bond, and all that comes with that, but it is also uniquely Chinese, providing an interesting window into the culture for a non-Chinese reader.
I thought the story dragged a bit at the end, but overall very good.
