Facing the Lion: Growing Up Maasai on the African Savanna
2 journalers for this copy...
An interesting tale of how a nomadic Maasai boy from Kenya grows up to go to a university in America and ends up being a teacher there. I've learned a lot about Maasai culture. In fact, I have read other Maasai related memoirs but did not learn as much. The beautiful thing is, Joseph is a truly global citizen. He is at easy teaching in a school in Virginia, then going home in the summer, dons his traditional clothes and herd cows with his brothers. As told by the soccer game episode, he certainly has drive; but more importantly, he never loses his heart.
As the book is written for children, the language is simplistic, and leaves me wanting more details.

Caught at the bookcrossing convention.
I began reading it yesterday. I like it so far. It describes a culture very diffrent from the one I grew up, and still live in.
