I found this fair-condition trade paperback at the Book Cellar, and nabbed it for another release copy.
This is volume 7, fairly early on (the series is into 70+ volumes now!), and has the very pleasant feature of a cover-illustration of "aloof big brother" Byakuya, known for his elaborate hair-ornaments (among other things).
There's a cast-of-characters and story-so-far summary up front, which is helpful. In this volume, both Uryu and Ichigo run afoul of Renji and Byakuya, who have come to take Rukia back to the Soul Society to pay for the crime of lending her powers to Ichigo. We (and Ichigo, if he wasn't too badly wounded to pay attention) get some lessons in the basics of zanpaku-to, and Rukia is taken to prison while Ichigo and Uryu wind up in intensive care. Doesn't pay to mess with soul reapers!
On the other hand, it doesn't pay to mess with Ichigo either, and when he learns that Rukia's going to be executed, he determines to try and save her. He gets some unexpected help, from a rather unorthodox soul reaper and from his friends, and the training sequences are often pretty funny. (Check out Uryu's reaction to the talking cat...)
There are some funny omake strips as well, including a Q&A hosted by Kon (!).
I hope this volume will give someone enough of a taste to let them know whether they'd like to dig deeper or not.
[See also the TV Tropes page about the series. And I enjoyed the anime adaptation.]
