August 30, 1975: the day fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan is glimpsed fleeing through the woods, never to be heard from again; the day Somerset, New Hampshire, lost its innocence.
Thirty-three years later, Marcus Goldman, a successful young novelist, visits Somerset to see his mentor, Harry Quebert, one of the country’s most respected writers, and to find a cure for his writer’s block as his publisher’s deadline looms. But Marcus’s plans are violently upended when Harry is suddenly and sensationally implicated in the cold-case murder of Nola Kellergan—whom, he admits, he had an affair with. As the national media convicts Harry, Marcus launches his own investigation, following a trail of clues through his mentor’s books, the backwoods and isolated beaches of New Hampshire, and the hidden history of Somerset’s citizens and the man they hold most dear. To save Harry, his own writing career, and eventually even himself, Marcus must answer three questions, all of which are mysteriously connected: Who killed Nola Kellergan? What happened one misty morning in Somerset in the summer of 1975? And how do you write a book to save someone’s life?

I don't use to read mysteries because mostly I consider them predictable and I get bored. But this book, even though it is 600 pages long, kept my interest until the very end. I was anxious to find out which is the truth about the Harry Quebert affair and the never ending twists offered me the climax I was looking for. There is a very good idea around which the author builts a very well crafted story. I think it would make a most awaited movie. The only thing that bothered me were some cliches that in my opinion could be cut out. Also I have to admit that the writing is pretty basic. But Joel Dicker earned my respect just because he managed to capture my attention so much that I felt I was unsolving the mystery myself. Despite his rather simple writing.

Sending it to earthcaroleanne as part of the Favourite Book 2016 Roundabout.
Forgot to pick this up from the post office at the weekend but got it today. Never heard of this at all so looking forward to it.

What a fantastic book! A great choice for the roundabout. I am one person who never guesses the end of the book and I certainly never guessed this one, especially with the twist. You are kept in the dark until the end. I devoured this but never seemed to get any further through it. I remember thinking I wasn't even half way through it at one point but I'd been reading it at every opportunity. In fact, I was pleased when the bus was stuck in traffic. Definite sense of loss when I reached the end. Can't say too much more in case I spoil anything.

Received a few days ago, but got muddled up with all my lovely birthday group parcels, so only got opened yesterday. Looks a good choice - looking forward to reading it.
WOW!
I read a lot of mystery type books and sometimes are distinctly underwhelmed by the BIG TWIST that the author attempts to cram in - either you can see it coming a mile away or it's been done to death loads of time before. But this book took me totally by surprise.
To start with, I was having difficulties getting into the read and wasn't sure I would like it all - the author's style (or maybe the translator's!) was simple and some of the characters were distinctly annoying and unbelievable (Goldman's Mum - OMG!). But once the story started to take off, I got a bit more involved and then BAM! I hit the last section with it's twist at about 10 one evening - and ended up staying up to the early hours finishing off the book...and that hasn't happened to me for a very long time.
CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS ONE ENOUGH.

Received today. Thanks!
Finally, I book that I could really get into.
Where to start? This is a book, I'd probably not have picked up myself so I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read it. I found the writing style one that I liked and soon immersed myself deep into the story.
Nola Kellergen is a 15 year old girl who disappears in 1975. He body is found 33 years later and opens up a huge case which proves difficult to solve. Initially Harry Quebert is the main suspect as he was in love with Nola in 1975, and her body is found in his garden, however he protests his innocence. The story is told from mostly Marcus Goldman's perspective. He is an author and Harry's friend and sets out to prove his innocence.
This book kept me guessing. I never really knew what was gonna happen next and I certainly never predicted the ending in any case. I liked the way it went back from 2008 to 1975 and vise versa. I got a real sense of the people in the book really, even ones who appear briefly. Marcus's mother was one of my favourites even though she wasn't around too much.
All in all, a 5 star rating from me. I'm so glad to have finally read a great book this year!

This book just arrived today from Belarus. I was surprised as I have stepped back from Bookcrossing as being the carer for my partner takes up more of my time. Dementia is such a horrible disease. Anyway hopefully this will be the book that will get my mojo going and get back into reading again
