I found this fair-condition softcover, along with Volume 1, at a local Savers thrift shop, and decided to give it a try.
This volume picks up with our heroes in mid-mission, with each of them trying to save the others from the pursuing villains while ensuring that their package gets delivered safely. There are some great scenes of quick-thinking, subterfuge, and general roguery that I'd have loved to fit into a D&D campaign - and, eventually, they triumph in their usual carefree fashion.
Another story focuses on a small mission - or so it seems: Banya's crossing a desert, very thirsty, when an old woman gives him water - and asks him to take a message to her son, who ran off to join the bandits some time back. He actually quotes his fees to her - but, in this case, admits that as she saved his life maybe he'll waive the fees for once {wry grin}. He infiltrates the bandit gang and finds the boy, but the lad turns on him and things look very grim for our hero. He actually takes more damage on this mission than he did on the ones involving entire armies - and while he completes his task, the ending's very bleak...
This volume ends with a teaser chapter introducing another mission, one that's already starting out at a disadvantage. I guess I'll have to look for Volume 3!
Lovely artwork, lively action, entertaining stories - I like this series!
